How Free Radicals Damage the Cell

by Dr Gary I Weinberger

In my previous blogs I tried to define and simplify the concept of antioxidants. I will now focus on how these antioxidants ROS (reactive oxygen species) and RNS (reactive nitrogen species) act to damage the cell. These reactive species exert their damage at the cellular level either by damaging the cell at the level of the cell’s nucleus or at the level of the main body of the cell or cytoplasm.

DNA DAMAGE- The nucleus is the “brain center” of the cell and is the area where the cell stores its genetic material. Damage to the nucleus can significantly alter the structure and function of the entire cell. The environmental stresses that are responsible for damage to the nucleus are oxidation, methylation, depurination, and deamination. Nitric oxide, a normal chemical found within the cell can undergo chemical changes when exposed to these environmental contaminants and form by-products like NO2, ONOO-, N2O3, and HNO2. These substances are known to cause abnormal alteration in the cell’s genetic material the result of which is the formation of various forms of cancer. By protecting the nuclear material from damage caused by environmental ROS and RNS through the use of antioxidants, either topically with antioxidant creams like creams containing lycopene or orally through supplements rich in antioxidants, it is hoped that the incidence of certain cancers can be reduced.

MITOCHONDRIAL DAMAGE- If the nucleus is the brain of the cell than the mitochondria is the “power supply” and “regulator” of the cell’s activity. The mitochondria is a cellular organelle (microscopic organ like the heart) found within the cell body or cytoplasm of the cell. This organelle is important for many of the normal functions of the cell and damage to this structure is important in several human diseases as well as the aging process. It is believed that environmental and dietary free radicals damage the cell at the level of the mitochondria and results in aging. It is postulated that foods rich in antioxidants that inhibit free radicals formed by high caloric diets may increase life expectancy by reducing the cellular damage caused by the ROS and RNS. It is thought that the mitochondria are the most important source of intra-cellular free radicals. It seems very likely that ROS free radicals are produced by the mitochondria which in turn results in damage to the mitochondrial DNA. This process may result in alterations of the mitochondrial genetic material and could play a role in certain diseases and cancers. It is believed that oral antioxidant supplements can reach protective levels in various organs like lungs, heart and prostate, however, newer studies are showing that sufficient antioxidant levels cannot be achieved in the skin through oral supplementation. It is for this reason that creams containing antioxidants like, lycopene and Vit E, appear to be the best way to protect the skin from the oxidative damage of environmental stresses like air pollution and the suns UV rays.

Continuously Renovating Your Skin Layers

To be effective you must remove the deteriorating outer layers and have your skincare products reach into the lower layers on new, renewed skin.

Dermopeel Cream is a one of kind multi-purpose night time skincare product that combines natural emollients, pharmaceutical strength azelaic, and kojic acids, and natures most powerful age-defying antioxidant Lycopene. The result is a luxurious therapeutic night cream that hydrates deep into the dermis to help reduce fine lines and wrinkles, even skin tone, and fade brown spots caused by the damaging effects of the sun as well as the hyperpigmentation that may result from adult acne.

The ingredients used in Dermopeel Cream have been shown to be clinically effective against rosacea and adult acne and for overall skin lightening in African-American, Hispanic, and Asian skin types. Dermopeel Cream is free of synthetic preservatives and perfumes and does not have any side effects that may be associated with hydroquinone skin fading products.

This is the only night-time therapeutic skin product that is all natural, 100% organic, that addresses the same conditions that chemicals such a hydroquinone does without any of the side effects.

The Many Benefits of Lycopene

We've spent quite a bit of time discussing lycopene products and how they can be beneficial to your skin. But did you know that lycopene is not only beneficial to the skin, but it's beneficial to the remainder of the body as well. As was mentioned before, lycopene is a powerful cancer fighting agent and plays a major role in both prevention and treatment of prostate cancer. However, studies indicate that the benefits of lycopene reach far beyond the most commonly known.

In fact, many people claim that lycopene can help to promote weight loss, can improve physical performance, and can help to repair blood vessels and nerves cells. That means, when applied to a skin care product, lycopene can help to treat discoloration caused by broken capillaries under the skin. I've the results of these studies; many women have turned to using lycopene skincare cream all over their bodies and not just on their face and neck.

These medical studies go on to reveal that lycopene is more than twice as powerful as they carotene and can help the body more readily absorb vitamin E. We already know vitamin E is a major contributor to skin health, and with lycopene, vitamin E can work more efficiently. In short, lycopene skincare cream plays double duty. Not only does it act as a natural UV protecter, but it can also help your body and your skin respond more successfully to other nutrients.
The utilization of lycopene skincare cream will protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun, allow your skin to replenish itself by combating free radicals, will reduce the size and appearance of your pores by increasing the oxidation of the cells, and a host of other age fighting properties that will make a dramatic change in how you feel about your skin.

If you're interested in turning around the aging process and treating your skin with the highest quality skincare cream on the market, you should consider looking into lycopene products. The benefits of lycopene speak for themselves. Consider doing a few consumer reviews, and examining the ways that lycopene skincare products can benefit you in your daily routine.
You don't have to settle for premature aging, you don't have to settle for large pores, wrinkles, or sun damage, the hope for your skin is in the products you elect to use.
